The Weeping Window Comes to Wales

You might have heard about this poignant installation on the news, of 6,000 handmade poppies which beautifully cascade from the ramparts toward the ground below. Installed within Caernarfon Castle, this installation has attracted a lot of attention and tourism toward the area, as a beautiful, artistic, yet sombre reminder of the lives lost within the First World War.

The Weeping Window is accompanied by a special exhibition, Remembrance for Peace, which features the First Book of Remembrance which has been specially loaned to the Royal Welsh Fusilier’s Museum which is conveniently housed within Caernarfon Castle.

The scale of this installation truly has to be seen to be believed. Seeing each and every poppy that makes up the motionless stream of red which represents the blood of the 35,000 Welsh soldiers that lost their lives to defend their homes and loved ones means that this installation is both unbelievably poignant, and very beautiful.

Even over 100 years from the start of World War One, it is truly important to remember those that paid the ultimate price in order for us to live – for without their sacrifice paid 100 years ago within the Battle of the Somme and of course the entirety of World War One, our lives would be very different.

World War One is known as one of humanity’s greatest conflicts – and for good reason. The sense of loss that the First World War caused has been most keenly felt for generations, and the lives of the men which left Wales to defend it and did not return, should be honoured.

This installation within Caernarfon is an excellent way to remember those who have fallen and those who were wounded within all of the wars our country has been forced to endure, and is widely credited for capturing the imagination of young and old alike via it’s imaginative and symbolic design.
