Things to Do In Caernarfon
There is plenty to do in the surrounding area of our hotel Caernarfon. No trip to Caernarfon would be complete without visiting the historical treasures that can be seen around every corner. Caernarfon is nestled on the edge of Snowdonia, so if it’s not just magnificent views you’re after and you fancy a bit of exploring then we have just the place for you.
Caernarfon Castle
The obvious place to start is Caernarfon Castle. It’s not possible to visit Caernarfon without seeing the imposing structure as it’s really not hard to miss! It is definitely worth having a gander inside though as you will be able to further explore the castle’s towers and visit the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum which is located inside the Queen’s Tower and Chamberlain Tower.
Maritime Museum
Head on over to Victoria Dock where you will discover the Maritime Museum which was once the home for the town’s mortuary. However, step inside now and you will have plenty to feast your eyes on, including an exhibition about the Menai Strait ferries. Perfect for boat enthusiasts.
Caernarfon Town Walls
Unfortunately, you can’t walk along these walls like you can in Conwy, however, you can walk around at ground level and enjoy the medieval masterpiece. Want to see the bigger picture? Cross the bridge opposite Seiont bank and you will be able to capture some of the most breath-taking photographs of the overall structure.
Welsh Highland Railway
Fancy seeing a little bit more of the beautiful Welsh countryside? Hop on to the Welsh Highland Railway where you can do just that! You will be transported through Snowdonia where you can experience some of the most spectacular sights North Wales has to offer.
Segontium
Segontium was built in 77AD and is so big that the entire castle would sit quite comfortably within it. Now turned visitor centre and museum, this Roman fort is completely free and is a great place if you are visiting the area on a tighter budget.
Galeri
Galeri is well known as the cultural hub of Caernarfon which hosts a mix of musicals, films and theatrical events as well as art exhibitions and workshops. Pop inside and have a coffee and a cake on the ground floor or head out to the dockside seating area where you can enjoy the lovely views of Caernarfon’s marina.
Pleasure Cruises
Between May and October, you can have your chance of taking a pleasure cruise along the Menai Strait. Opt for a 40-minute trip or a 2 hour long evening cruise and take in the surrounding sights of Snowdonia’s National Park.
Shopping
Caernarfon has many narrow medieval backstreets where you will find some real shopping gems. Full of independent and charming shops, Caernarfon sells everything from local arts and crafts, food and drink, music and beautiful gifts that you can take home with you. As well as these small unique shops in Caernarfon’s nooks and crannies, this historic town also has a few high street names too!
