Caernarfon Castle
This is one the finest displays of history in Wales and is a fortress to behold. It was built between 1283 and 1330 as a military stronghold and today welcomes curious visitors and history fanatics to its remarkable premises. The series of interconnected walls, high look out towers and the museum offer lots to learn, take photographs of and admire. The castle is centrally located in the town, meaning you are conveniently located to grab a bite to eat or a coffee afterwards!
Segontium Roman Fort
Just east of Caernarfon town centre is an old ancient fort originating from the time of the Roman Empire. It actually dates all the way back to 77 AD, during the time that General Gnaeus Julius Agricola completed his conquest of Wales by finally taking control of Anglesey. Segontium Roman Fort was designed to house up to 1000 soldiers and there were coins found that signified it was used up until 394 AD! It is a nice activity to enjoy and will undoubtedly get you thinking about the history of our country.
Parc Glynllifon
This is a large garden that once was a part of the estate of Lord Newborough. It is now full of rare and beautiful plants, kept in pristine condition by the establishment. Definitely a place to bring your camera, as there are several water features which you can even play in! You’ll also see a number of modern sculpture trails and also some locally run treasure hunts and orienteering courses that provide much entertainment. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to these gardens as long as they’re kept on the lead. This is just a few miles away from Tyn Rhos Hotel near Caernarfon.
Inigo Jones Slate Works
This is a slate works that was founded in 1861 and was mainly created to produce school writing slates, during the period when paper was replaced. The use for slate further expanded and soon was sourcing slate from all over North Wales. Some major buildings and interiors have used some of the slates used here, for example with the world famous Queen Mary, which is now a tourist attraction in Long Beach, California. More recently the slate works has supplied more slate products for domestic use and are even now making modern slate products that can be interlinked or complementary to electronic devices! This is a fun and interesting day out and does offer workshop tours, which children usually love!
Dinas Dinlle
This is a beautiful long and sandy beach that is around 6 miles away from the town of Caernarfon. The flatness of the land offers much contrast to the Llyn Peninsula that is visible in the distance, whilst yellow sand and clear blue waters take up your foreground vision. It is popular all year round for walkers and ramblers, whilst the summer offers a chance to sunbathe, play beach sports, have a swim and eat picnics!
